Deploying GlobalPlatform Specifications within transit programs can:
- Allow transit card issuers to partner with other organizations from other industries to jointly offer multiple embedded applications on one secure chip, increasing the token's value to the end user
- Protect the issuer's investment by 'future-proofing' the program against business decisions which have not been made at the time of deployment. GlobalPlatform's flexible and scalable technology can accommodate significant changes to the program post-issuance
- Provide a versatile and cost-effective processing and administration platform.
Transit Implementations
Beijing Transit Card Contactless Micro-Payments Scheme KPay, a Beijing-based service provider responsible for setting up a point of sale (POS) network for Beijing contactless transit card top-up and retail payment in 2006, sought POS terminals to support its existing multi-application environment that enabled prepaid, loyalty and contactless payment. In June 2007 it partnered with Blue Bamboo to integrate contactless IC technology into the Blue Bamboo H50 GPRS Terminal. The purpose of the collaboration was to provide a POS solution that could be deployed into local convenience stores that accepted Beijing transit cards for 'tap-and-go' retail purchases cost-effectively.
This solution uses GlobalPlatform device technology – the GPD/STIP Specification – as the software platform. By complying with the GPD/STIP Specification, the terminal enables multiple applications to reside securely side-by-side on a device. This allows increased return on investment as additional programs such as gift, loyalty, financial payment etc are added to the existing deployed infrastructure.
As of November 2007, 15 million transit cards issued by Beijing Municipal Administration & Communication Card Co. Ltd. for use in the subway, buses and taxis were being accepted for 'tap-and-go' retail purchases at various outlets across the city including supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, drug stores and theatres. It is estimated that 2,000 Blue Bamboo terminals have been deployed.

SK Telecom – OTA Application Download In 2004, Singapore-based Cassis International launched its MobileMatrix solution that enabled customers of SK Telecom, the leading mobile phone service provider in South Korea, to download a credit application onto the SIM over-the-air (OTA).
It was the world's first OTA download of an EMV payment application onto a USIM-enabled 3G phone. By facilitating communication between the SIM card and SK Telecom's back-office network the mobile phone acts like a credit card. Customers are able to use the downloaded applications to make purchases with their handsets via infrared waves or radio frequencies at point of sale terminals equipped with the technology to accept the transmissions. SK Telecom customers can decide the type of applications loaded into their handset, including CAS (Conditional Access System) for DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting through satellite) and T-Money (public transportation).
GlobalPlatform's Card and Key Management Specification and its Smart Card Management Functional Requirements technology provides the required functionality to download, add and post-issue applications. This technology offers the highest level of security, keeping the applications separate with security firewalls. The deployment of MobileMatrix to SK Telecom was the first ecosystem to support GlobalPlatform cards in the mobile environment.
At least four million handsets support the 'Moneta' m-commerce project, which utilizes Cassis' MobileMatrix solution.
GlobalPlatform member solution providers include Cassis International.
The following transit implementations also utilized GlobalPlatform technology:
- Daejeon Project
- Hyundai Motor Cards
- Korea Train Express (KTX)
- Polish Transportation Authority
- Seoul Transit
- SK Telecom – Moneta Mobile Card
