Deploying GlobalPlatform Specifications within smart card based retail programs can:

  • Allow the issuer to evolve and enhance the cardholder's retail experience, through post-issuance application download capabilities
  • Enable multiple applications from different partners to reside securely and independently on one card, increasing the value of the card to the cardholder
  • Protect the issuer's investment by 'future-proofing' the program against business decisions which have not been made at the time of deployment. GlobalPlatform's flexible and scalable infrastructure can accommodate significant changes to the program post-issuance.

Retail Implementations:

Beijing Transit Card Contactless Micro-Payments Scheme
In 2006 KPay, a Bejing-based service provider responsible for setting up a POS network for Beijing contactless transit card top-up and retail payment, sought POS terminals to support a secure multi-application environment enabling prepaid, loyalty and contactless payment at an affordable price. KPay partnered with Blue Bamboo to integrate contactless IC technology into the Blue Bamboo H50 GPRS Terminal. This device uses GlobalPlatform device technology – the GPD/STIP Specification – as the software platform to offer flexibility for further functionality, such as gift and loyalty applications. The purpose of the collaboration was to provide a POS solution subsequently deployed into local convenience stores, where Beijing transit cards have been accepted for 'tap-and-go’ retail purchases since June 2007.

By complying with the GPD/STIP Specification, Blue Bamboo’s H50 GPRS terminal enables multiple applications to securely reside side-by-side on a device. Increased return on investment (ROI) can be realized as additional programs (e.g. gift, loyalty, financial payment etc) are added to the existing deployed infrastructure.

The H50 infrastructure is updated efficiently using the GPRS OTA (over-the-air) capabilities of the platform, bringing greater value to system integrators. Remote application download significantly enhances the deployment cycle, time to market and ROI of terminal investment.

As of November 2007, 15 million transit cards, issued by Beijing Municipal Administration & Communication Card Co. Ltd. for use in the subway, buses and taxis, were being accepted for ‘tap-and-go’ retail purchases at various retail outlets across the city including supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, drug stores and theatres. When compared with PIN-entry or magnetic stripe cards swiped at check-out, contactless payment cards offer a faster and more convenient transaction method for both retailers and cardholders. It is estimated that 2,000 Blue Bamboo terminals were deployed by mid 2008.

This is the first time GlobalPlatform device technology has been used in a deployment which combines contactless, payment and transit applications and offers a clear demonstration of the advantages GlobalPlatform technology can bring to secure, multi-application and contactless deployments, regardless of industry or geographical market.

US smart Visa
'smart Visa' is a multi-application smart card program, which was launched in September 2000. The smart Visa technology platform enables member banks and merchant customers to combine traditional payment cards with value added applications such as downloadable coupons, secure access to private internet information and, ultimately, the ability to download new card applications via the PC.

smart Visa was deployed by five issuers in the US - First National Bank of Omaha, First USA (Bank One Corporation), Fleet Credit Card Services, Providian Financial Corp and Target Corporation's Retailers National Bank. At least 12 million cards have been issued. US processors have upgraded their acceptance infrastructure systems to process chip payment and US device manufacturers have made EMV-compliant stand alone and multi-lane POS solutions available to merchants.

Visa Wave - Malaysia
In April 2004, Visa Asia Pacific announced the national roll out of a contactless smart card program in Malaysia called Visa Wave. It was the world's first commercial implementation of a Visa contactless smart card program utilizing GlobalPlatform's interoperable multi-application technology and building on the global EMV smart card standard.

Visa Wave was a new form of contactless payment that removed the need to physically swipe the card in a reader. Visa Wave was specially developed for small and medium sized purchases and eliminated the need to provide a signature, input a PIN or hand the cashier the card. Payments are made via radio frequency similar to the 'tap and go' cards used in mass transit environments. Customers wave the card in front of the reader for payment to be securely deducted from the consumer's account. The Visa Wave card contains a Visa Smart Debit Credit payment chip and a single chip with contact and contactless interfaces. The world's first Visa Wave cards were issued by MBF Cards in Malaysia to over 2,000 consumers.

Today, various Malaysian card issuers participate in the program and offer Visa Wave to over 600,000 cardholders. From June 2005, Visa Wave cardholders were able to make contactless payments at a minimum of 4,000 merchant locations.

Visa Wave - Taiwan
In March 2005, Taiwan became the second market in the world after Malaysia to roll out a Visa Wave program. In November 2005, Watson, a retail pharmacy chain, and Chinatrust Commercial Bank launched a co-branded Visa Wave card to over 60,000 cardholders. The cards were accepted at 400 branch stores throughout Taiwan.

Since issuing the co-branded Watson Visa Wave card, Watson has seen a substantial increase in the average ticket size and monthly spending from customers using the co-branded Visa Wave card.

In January 2006, Chinatrust Commercial Bank launched a co-branded Visa Wave card with American wholesale retailer Costco. The Costco Visa Wave card was accepted initially at four Costco stores in Taiwan with over 240,000 cardholders.

Visa Wave Mobile - Malaysia
In April 2006, Visa launched a pilot program in Malaysia combining Visa Wave contactless payment technology and Near Field Communication (NFC) allowing 200 Maybankard Visa cardholders and Maxis phone subscribers to make payments via their cell phone at over 2,000 merchant outlets throughout Malaysia where Visa Wave is accepted.

The Mobile Visa Wave pilot progam was the first of its kind in the world and utilized GlobalPlatform's interoperable multi-application technology and the global EMV smart card standard to allow pilot participants to wave and pay with their cell phones at over 4,000 merchant locations where the Visa Wave sign is displayed.
