Deploying GlobalPlatform Specifications within retail programs can:
- Allow the issuer to evolve and enhance the cardholder's retail experience, through post-issuance application download capabilities
- Enable multiple embedded applications from different partners to reside securely and independently on one secure chip, increasing the value of the token to the end user
- Protect the issuer's investment by 'future-proofing' the program against business decisions which have not been made at the time of deployment. GlobalPlatform's flexible and scalable technology can accommodate significant changes to the program post-issuance.
Retail Implementations
Giesecke & Devrient Commonwealth Bank of Australia
In 2007 the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) issued it cardholders with MasterCard PayPass cards, becoming the first financial organization in Australia to pioneer dual interface EMV technology. PayPass enables cardholders to make payments using both contact and contactless technology.
Based on GlobalPlatform's interoperable multi-application card technology and building on the global EMV smart card standard, the MasterCard PayPass card - which is supplied by Giesecke and Devrient - enables its holder to quickly and conveniently purchase low value goods and services at outlets where contactless payment terminals have been installed by merchants.
As the operator of the largest financial services distribution network in the country with a significant customer base, CBA has set a precedent for innovative payment solutions for consumers and merchants.

Beijing Transit Card Contactless Micro-Payments Scheme
KPay, a Beijing-based service provider responsible for setting up a point of sale (POS) network for Beijing contactless transit card top-up and retail payment in 2006, sought POS terminals to support its existing multi-application environment that enabled prepaid, loyalty and contactless payment. In June 2007 it partnered with Blue Bamboo to integrate contactless IC technology into the Blue Bamboo H50 GPRS Terminal. The purpose of the collaboration was to provide a POS solution that could be deployed into local convenience stores that accepted Beijing transit cards for 'tap-and-go' retail purchases cost-effectively.
This solution uses GlobalPlatform device technology – the GPD/STIP Specification – as the software platform. By complying with the GPD/STIP Specification, the terminal enables multiple applications to reside securely side-by-side on a device. This allows increased return on investment as additional programs such as gift, loyalty, financial payment etc are added to the existing deployed infrastructure.
As of November 2007, 15 million transit cards issued by Beijing Municipal Administration & Communication Card Co. Ltd. for use in the subway, buses and taxis were being accepted for 'tap-and-go' retail purchases at various outlets across the city including supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, drug stores and theatres. It is estimated that 2,000 Blue Bamboo terminals have been deployed.

Visa Wave Mobile Malaysia In April 2006, Visa launched a pilot program in Malaysia combining Visa Wave contactless payment technology and Near Field Communication (NFC). This enabled 200 Maybankard Visa cardholders and Maxis phone subscribers to make payments via their cell phone at more than 2,000 merchant outlets throughout Malaysia where Visa Wave is accepted.
The program was the first of its kind launched by Visa and utilized GlobalPlatform's interoperable multi-application card technology to allow pilot participants to 'wave and pay' with their cell phones.

Visa Wave Taiwan In March 2005, Taiwan became the second market in the world (after Malaysia) to roll out a Visa Wave program. Visa Wave cards utilize GlobalPlatform's interoperable multi-application technology to enable contactless payment.
Watson, a retail pharmacy chain, and Chinatrust Commercial Bank launched a co-branded Visa Wave card to more than 60,000 users. It was initially accepted at 400 stores throughout Taiwan. Since issuance, Watson has seen a substantial increase in the average ticket size and monthly spending from customers using the co-branded card.
In January 2006, Chinatrust Commercial Bank launched another co-branded Visa Wave card with American wholesale retailer, Costco. More than 240,000 cardholders were able to use the Costco Visa Wave card at four Costco stores in Taiwan.

Visa Wave Malaysia In April 2004, Visa Asia Pacific announced the national roll out of a contactless smart card program in Malaysia – Visa Wave. It was the world's first commercial implementation of a Visa contactless smart card program and was specifically for small and medium sized purchases, eliminating the need to provide a signature, input a PIN or hand over the card for a cashier to swipe in a reader.
Based on GlobalPlatform's interoperable multi-application card technology and building on the global EMV smart card standard, consumers wave the card in front of a reader for payment to be securely deducted from their account. The Visa Wave card, supplied by Giesecke & Devrient, is based on dual interface technology that enables both contact and contactless payments to be made.
The world's first Visa Wave cards were issued by MBF Cards in Malaysia to over 2,000 consumers. By September 2006 there were more than 600,000 cardholders and more than 4,000 merchant locations in the country. Various Malaysian card issuers currently participate in the program.
