Committees

Technical activity and specification development within GlobalPlatform is carried out by three committees - the Card Committee, Device Committee and Systems Committee. Collectively, the technical committees address all issues that relate to the main components of the smart card infrastructure and are populated by representatives from GlobalPlatform's Full and Participating Member organizations. Each committee manages its workload by forming working groups, which are assigned to discuss and progress specific technical deliverables. The working groups regularly report back to the main committee on key decisions and outcomes. This approach allows members to channel their expertise and knowledge into targeted work initiatives. It also allows GlobalPlatform to benefit from the output of debate and collaboration between some of the best technical minds in the smart card industry.

Each technical committee and its working groups progress work activities through meetings and conference calls which are scheduled as required throughout the year.

GlobalPlatform is the worldwide leader in smart card infrastructure development. As of October 2008, 90 known GlobalPlatform-based implementations had been reported worldwide and an estimated 305.7 million GlobalPlatform-based smart cards had been deployed. Additionally, two billion mid range USIM/SIM cards worldwide are estimated to use GlobalPlatform card technology to enable over-the-air (OTA) application downloads for 3G and GSM mobile networks. These figures are predicted to rise significantly by the end of 2009.
